This textbook is the product of a collective effort of historians from several research institutes and universities: the Institute of World History and the Institute for African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, the Institute of African and Asian Countries at the Lomonosov Moscow State University and the Moscow Institute of International Relations. In a concise and accessible form the authors cover the main problems and topics of the history of Sub-Saharan Africa from the 15th century to the present. Among these are the development of African civilizations, the creation and the collapse of colonial system, the making of colonial society, the development of anti-colonialism and of the ideology of African nationalism, and the events, problems and challenges of the late 20th-early 21st centuries. The textbook contains essays on the history of 20 countries of the region. Uniquely it also offers a history of relations between Russia and Black Africa. The sizable supplement contains documents pertaining to the history of the region. Indexes, chronology, glossary and a bibliography conclude the text. The textbook also contains maps and illustrations.

This textbook is the first Russian manual on the modern and contemporary history of sub-Saharan Africa, created by a collective of authors. It is designed for students, teachers, university lecturers and for any reader interested in the history of Africa and Asia.
